چکیده

High resolution multi-monochromatic measurements of auroral emissions have revealed the first optical evidence of co-existing small-scale auroral features resulting from separate high and low energy populations of precipitating electrons on the same field line. The features exhibit completely separate motion and morphology. From emission ratios and ion chemistry modeling, the average energy and energy flux of the precipitation is estimated. The high energy precipitation is found to form large pulsating patches of 0.1 Hz with a 3 Hz modulation, and non-pulsating co-existing discrete auroral filaments. The low energy precipitation is observed simultaneously on the same field line as discrete filaments with no pulsation. The simultaneous structures do not interact, and they drift with different speeds in different directions. We suggest that the high and low energy electron populations are accelerated by separate mechanisms, at different distances from earth. The small scale structures could be caused by local instabilities above the ionosphere.

Simultaneous imaging of aurora on small scale in OI (777.4 nm) and N21P to estimate energy and flux of precipitation

Simultaneous images of the aurora in three emissions, N21P (673.0 nm), OII (732.0 nm) and OI (777.4 nm), have been analysed; the ratio of atomic oxygen to molecular nitrogen has been used to provide estimates of the changes in energy and flux of precipitation within scale sizes of 100 m, and with temporal resolution of 32 frames per second. The choice of filters for the imagers is discussed, wi...

The transition energy and the beaming angle of converted LO-mode waves from 100 to 400 kHz through density gradient according to observations of kilometric continuum radiations in the plasmapause

The satellite observations such as the Cluster mission with four-point measurements show some local fluctuations in the density gradient in the vicinity of the plasmapause. These structures are found over a broad range of spatial scales, with a size from 20 to 5000 km. Also, the simultaneous observations of the kilometric continuum by IMAGE (Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration)...

Energetics of the ionospheric feedback interaction

[1] The ionospheric feedback instability has been invoked as a possible mechanism for the formation of narrow auroral arcs. This instability can excite eigenmodes of both field line resonances and the ionospheric Alfvén resonator, producing narrow-scale structures. Although the basic dispersion relation of this instability has been discussed for both of these cases, the energetics of this insta...

Climate Change Impact on Precipitation Extreme Events in Uncertainty Situation; Passing from Global Scale to Regional Scale

Global warming and then climate change are important topics studied by researchers throughout the world in the recent decades. In these studies, climatic parameters changes are investigated. Considering large-scaled output of AOGCMs and low precision in computational cells, uncertainty analysis is one of the principles in doing hydrological studies. For this reason, it is tried that investigati...

Occurrence and average behavior of pulsating aurora

Motivated by recent event studies and modeling efforts on pulsating aurora, which conclude that the precipitation energy during these events is high enough to cause significant chemical changes in the mesosphere, this study looks for the bulk behavior of auroral pulsations. Based on about 400 pulsating aurora events, we outline the typical duration, geomagnetic conditions, and change in the pea...
